Kiva’s mission is to connect people—through microlending—to help alleviate poverty.
By combining microfinance with the power of the internet, Kiva enables individuals to lend to entrepreneurs in many countries across the globe, who might otherwise not qualify for loans.
YOU choose who to lend to - whether a baker in Afghanistan, a goat herder in Uganda, a farmer in Peru, a restaurateur in Cambodia, or a tailor in Mongolia - and as they repay their loan, you get your money back. It's a powerful and sustainable way to empower someone right now to lift themselves out of poverty.
The Unitarian Universalist Church in Cherry Hill Kiva Lending Team was formed in October 2008, with a dozen individual members of the church and friends. In the spring of 2010, the Social Justice Committee joined the UUCCH Lending Team to honor the life of member/activist/friend, David Kalkstein, by putting memorial funds to work in the wider world.

Everyone is welcome to join the UUCCH Lending Team – all you need is a credit card number or PayPal account and $25 to make a loan. But before you JOIN, we recommend that you do some research. Browse the Kiva website and learn how Kiva operates, and about the entrepreneurs and the funding partners who advance the loans and collect repayment.
Be clear -- you will not make any interest on your Kiva loan, but repayment rates average better than 98%. The funds are credited back to your Kiva account as the loan is repaid by the borrower. Those funds are then available to you to make more loans and extend the community of giving!
At the time you make a loan, Kiva asks you to include a donation to help offset their costs—Kiva has overhead, including 34 full-time employees. This donation is optional.
When you decide to make a loan, follow the instructions at the www.kiva.org :
- Create your own account
- Join the Unitarian Universalist Church in Cherry Hill Lending Team.
- Select the entrepreneur you want to make a loan to
- Choose your method of payment and make your loan!
- Follow the progress of the entrepreneurs you have chosen as they repay the loan.
