Frequently Asked Questions

What are my options for giving?

There are many ways to make planned gifts. Some choices are: Bequests, Life Insurance, Trusts, Pooled Income Funds, Charitable Gift Annuities, and more. For details, you should seek the advice of an estate planning attorney.

Is this only for wealthy people with complex estates?
No. Small gifts are as important and welcome as large gifts. All gifts are a statement of belief in our principles, and are appreciated and respected.

Do I need an estate planning attorney?

You certainly need an estate plan. This could be a simple will or a more complicated trust. It ensures that your assets will benefit those you care about most. Because there could be serious financial consequences, and because we cannot provide legal advice, we strongly recommend that you consult a responsible professional.

Can I specify how my gift gets used?

Yes, you can. UUCCH will welcome gifts earmarked for special purposes. Such gifts are said to be “restricted”. However, unrestricted gifts provide us with greater flexibility and are preferred. Rest assured, however, that we shall never decline restricted gifts that support our mission.

What happens to unrestricted gifts?

All unrestricted gifts are transferred to the Unrestricted Endowment Fund of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Cherry Hill, which is invested in the Unitarian Universalist Common Endowment Fund (UUCEF). The investment income can then be used for Board-approved facilities or activities that promote the long-term well being of our local Church.

Does this offset the need for annual pledging?

Absolutely, not! Ideally, the church’s operating expenses are covered by pledges from current members. The funds from the Endowment can then be used for special projects that promote Unitarian Universalism.

Why do we have these restrictions?

People want to know that their gifts will have a lasting impact on the future of the church. Protecting the principal of gifts and using the earnings wisely will encourage generosity and promote a culture of giving within the church.
